Summit of Speed Wrap-Up

Journeyman stallions made their mark at the July 6 Summit of Speed at Calder Race Course, with five stakes horses on the day.

In the $150,000 Carry Back S. (G3) for 3-year-olds, Exclusive Quality-sired Red Rocket Express and Sr. Quisqueyano finished second and third, respectively. Red Rocket Express, who has won four of six starts, was making his first start in a stakes. The chestnut sophomore is owned, trained and was bred by Chad Stewart. Sr. Quisqueyano, already a two-time stakes winner of the Calder Derby and Seacliff S., elevated his bankroll to $339,150.

Exclusive Quality is the runaway leader on Florida’s third crop sire list. With more than $1.5 million in progeny earnings this year, he leads his closest pursuer by more than $900,000. His 42 winners is also twice as many as any other third crop sire in the Sunshine State.

In the $350,000 Smile Sprint H. (G2), Trinniberg, by Teuflesberg, was a nose better than the veteran Jackson Bend, by Hear No Evil. With over $1.5 million in earnings, Trinniberg is Teuflesberg’s leading lifetime earner. He capped last year’s championship sprinter season with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1).

Jackson Bend, the all-time leading earner for Hear No Evil, pushed his bankroll to $1,648,250 with Saturday’s performance. The 6-year-old has wins in the Carter H. (G1) and Forego S. (G1) as highlights of his eight career stakes victories. Hear No Evil is also represented this year by Conquest Whiplash, winner of Woodbine’s $150,000 Victoria S. on June 22.

In the Grade 3 Azalea S., Cowtown Cat’s Dreaming of Susie was an unlucky second, losing by just a neck after dueling for the entire six furlongs in the $150,000 race for 3-year-old fillies. First or second in all five of her starts, Dreaming of Susie has earned $83,600. She was bred in Florida by Gerald Bailey and is owned by Frank Calabrese.

Cowtown Cat was Florida’s leading freshman sire of winners last year, and with 16 winners already this year amassing nearly $500,000 in progeny earnings, he is second on the Florida Second Crop Sire list.
