R Sassy Lass, a 2-year-old filly by Journeyman Stud stallion Exclusive Quality, wore down Coco’s Wildcat to win the $100,000 Sandpiper Stakes on Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs.
Breaking well, R Sassy Lass quickly raced into contention to settle into third place early. At the top of the stretch, she rallied three wide and overtook Wildcat Heir\’s daughter Coco’s Wildcat to win by a half-length. Sizzling fractions for the six-furlong sprint were :22.2, :45.30, :57.60 with a winning time of 1:10.48 to produce another Journeyman exacta in a stakes race in Florida.
Raced by partners Averill Racing, Silver Oak Stable and Gregory Kaufman, R Sassy Lass is trained by Kirk Ziadie. She had previously broken her maiden by an impressive nine and a half lengths on September 27 at Gulfstream Park. With her initial career stakes win, R Sassy Lass boosted her seasonal earnings to $86,455 on two wins and one third in four starts.
Bred by Brent and Crystal Fernung, R Sassy Lass is out of the winning Cherokee Run mare Sassy Bear. The latter is also the dam of Kodiak Kutie, a graded-stakes placed winner in Puerto Rico. Consigned by Journeyman Bloodstock Services to the 2014 OBS April juvenile sale, R Sassy Lass was bought for $40,000 by Richard Averill.
Exclusive Quality, a stakes-winning son of leading sire Elusive Quality, is currently both the fourth-leading Florida general sire ($2,339,122) and Florida juvenile sire ($669,822). In addition to aforementioned stakes winner R Sassy Lass, he is also represented this season by stakes winners Quality Lass and Holywell, as well as graded stakes-placed Sr. Quisqueyano. On Saturday his son Sandor The Hound also ran 3rd in the Gold Rush Stakes at Golden Gate Field in his first stakes start.
