Cool Coal Man’s 2-year-old colt Matt King Coal broke his maiden in stylish fashion at Belmont Park Oct. 29, winning a $75,000 maiden special weight by 5 ¾ lengths.

Owned by Lady Sheila Stable and trained by Linda Rice, Matt King Coal carved out the early pace under Jose Ortiz. He was never headed and opened up on his 11 rivals in the lane. He crossed the wire a clear winner of the one-mile event, stopping the timer over a good track in 1:36.38 and earning an eye-catching 96 Beyer Speed Figure.

A $250,000 OBS April sale graduate, Matt King Coal is produced from the Came Home mare Donna Marie from the family of multiple Grade 3 winner Biogio’s Rose. He was bred in Florida by John Shaw.

Cool Coal Man, a multiple graded stakes-winning son of Horse of the Year Mineshaft, stood the 2015 season for $3,500. Cool Coal Man is the No.2-ranked second-crop sire in Florida in 2015.
